Pre-treatment checklist
After treatment you may feel unwell, anxious and self-conscious for some days or weeks and therefore not able to do the things you normally would. You may be unable to drive, use public transport, go shopping, cook, socialise or see very well. It's a good idea to think ahead and make suitable arrangements to make that time as easy as possible. For example,
- Talk things through with a confident. Be really sure that this is something you want to attempt. You may like to talk to a professional counsellor. Knowing that you made the decision for good reasons will make it easier to deal with if the results are disappointing.
- Anaesthetic, surgery and recovery can really take it out of you so build up your physical and mental reserves. Prepare for surgery by being as healthy as you can prior to going to hospital: eat well, take vitamins, take exercise.
- Arrange transport home from the treatment centre or hospital. You will not be able to drive and may not feel like using public transport.
- Pre-arrange your treatment follow-up plan with your surgeon and keep your local doctor informed. Understand what you have to do if you have a concern or if there is an emergency.
- Have a list of useful and emergency contacts, e.g. medical, home help, food delivery.
- Ensure somebody is available to give you the necessary support during recovery. Make sure they understand your follow-up plan and emergency procedures. If you do not have a friend or relative you feel able to impose on, then contact your local health service who may be able to provide this.
- Stock up on essentials at home such as prescription medicines, pain killers, toiletries, groceries, microwavable meals.
- Get your paperwork and housework up to date before you go for treatment.
- Ensure things are clean and sterilised where appropriate to reduce the risk of post-operative infections.
- Have a few things to entertain yourself when you may not feel able to watch TV or read, such as audio books and a radio.
- If you live alone, try not to get too isolated during recovery as this will most likely increase your feelings of anxiety. Give your friends a call or book a therepeutic treatment.
